Do you aspire to live a more focused, value-driven life? If creating a deeper connection with how you want to show up in your life is calling you—rather than letting your days simply happen—then you’re ready to make setting intentions a daily habit that shapes how you want to feel and what you want to experience in life.
Taking the time to reflect, learn how to set intentions, and get clear on what truly matters shifts how you move through your day, infusing it with purpose and ease while actively manifesting or “calling in” your desires, you begin to live from the end state, aligning your actions with your deepest intentions.
Stepping into the practice of intention setting allows you to reconnect with what feels most meaningful to you. This mindset practice has become a habitual way of life for me as a life coach for women. Living with intentionality, raising your vibration and remaining focused are just a few things we will walk through in my step-by-step guide on setting intentions, a part of my ebook, Turning Dreams to Reality — a great tool for your next level of personal growth.
What Does Setting Intentions Mean?
Let’s start by gaining a clear understanding of what setting intentions means for busy women today. Unlike wishful thinking or traditional goal setting, which are future-oriented and focus on outcomes, setting intentions is rooted in the present — consciously choosing your focus and aligning your actions with authenticity to what matters most to you.
Life can be chaotic, but intention setting allows us to be more in tune with ourselves. This deeper connection enables us to go into things with intentions staying focused and aligned with our goals. It helps us set positive intentions that feel authentic and trust ourselves to navigate the chaos

Why Setting Intentions Is Powerful
You’ve heard of the infamous New Year’s resolutions, areas in our life we tend to wish to remove—like losing those extra Christmas pounds or a habit we grew accustomed to. Well, I ditched those years ago for intention setting. Not to say there’s anything inherently wrong with resolutions, except in the way they are applied.
Many people put too much, if not all, their efforts and hope into one time of year, then get busy, fall short on their goal, and eventually lose motivation, only to be left feeling badly about themselves. But goals don’t have to be reserved for the start of the year or even the start of the week. They can and should be an ongoing part of your internal belief system that guides you daily, keeping you aligned with what truly matters to you.
Instead of hoping to lose 10 pounds, take charge of your life by setting an intention to realistically adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Intention examples:
"I am embracing a career transition that aligns with my passion."
"I am nurturing deeper connections with those I care about."
"I am committed to loving myself unconditionally."
Unless we believe in the genuine possibility that we can reach our goals at any time, we may miss opportunities for growth and progress.
As women, we often create self-imposed barriers and obstacles unconsciously, driven by limiting beliefs that fuel our doubts and insecurities. However, if we start learning setting intentions, we can break through these barriers, significantly improving our overall mental well-being and mindfulness, which can offer numerous benefits, such as:
Increased clarity and focus
A deeper connection to your personal values
Enhanced decision-making abilities
More mindful actions and reactions
A greater sense of purpose and fulfillment
Newfound confidence from committing to and following through with our actions
With a better understanding of the importance of intention setting, let’s dive into the process.
How to Set Intentions: A Step-By-Step Guide
Spiritually speaking, setting intentions can become a ceremonial practice, where you connect with your higher self and the energy of the universe by infusing your intention-setting process with mindfulness rituals like lighting a candle, meditating, or writing down your intentions to symbolically release them into the world. Or your practice can be as simple as verbally committing your intentions to yourself privately.

Step 1 – Be Present
Either way, understanding how to set intentions begins by staying present in the moment, which allows you to think good thoughts and make wiser decisions about what matters most—your health, career, relationships, etc. Then, set your intention using these three steps:
Step 2 – Reflect on Your Values
Begin by understanding your core values, as they will guide your intentions. Invest time in self-reflection through journaling or meditation, channeling your innermost beliefs. By identifying your values—those areas of your life that matter most—you create a strong foundation for setting intentions that align with your goals and lifestyle, rather than being influenced by external expectations, comparisons to others, or fleeting desires.
Step 3 – Be Specific With Your Intentions
Finding your breath and staying calm helps create clarity when setting intentions, activating them in a way that is specific and intentional, rather than vague.
Intention examples:
Instead of "I want to be happier," consider "I will practice gratitude every morning." This level of specificity ensures that your intentions are actionable and coming from a place of clarity and purpose.

Step 4 – Write Your Intentions Down
Make your intentions tangible by writing them down. Use various methods, such as journaling, or a vision board to reinforce your commitment. I like sticky notes because I can place them just about anywhere as colorful reminders — on the fridge, the bedroom mirror, or laptop. By documenting, and therefore setting intentions, you put your intentions out there to the universe. Plus, it becomes a powerful reminder to stay focused in case you get busy and forget—it happens to the best of us.
Step 5 – Align Your Actions With Your Intentions
To turn your intentions into reality, ensure you take actions daily to support them by breaking down larger intentions into smaller, actionable steps. I like to call them “baby steps.” For instance, if your intention is to “cultivate positivity,” begin by practicing daily affirmations or engaging in small acts of kindness. Fostering personal accountability helps you celebrate each act as a win, a “baby step” toward your larger goal!
Intention examples:
Instead of a big distant goal like: "I want to have a completely organized home by the end of the year." A small, tangible intention such as: "I will make an effort to organize one area of my home, one at a time."
The big goal is broad and long-term, while the small intention is a specific, purposeful action, that is achievable, and can be completed in a short time frame. But most importantly it is a clear path aligned with your highest good.
Setting Intentions for the Day: How to Start Each Day With Purpose
My clients know this well, but I cannot emphasize this enough, establish your morning routine grounded in well-being, setting intentions for the day ahead. Create a list of practical examples.
Intention examples:
"I choose to remain grounded and calm today."
"Today, I will embrace growth and progress."
"I will approach challenges with confidence."
As a women's empowerment coach, I provide valuable guidance and support throughout your journey of setting intentions. So I am certain that by working with a coach, you can gain clarity, identify your values, and develop actionable steps towards creating a more fulfilling life, especially if the thought of getting started feels overwhelming.
